🚤 Canal Boating: The Unofficial Rulebook 🚤

Heading out on the canals? Here are a few must-know tips to keep things smooth, safe, and fun:

👉 Stick to the right – just like driving, keep to the right when passing others.

👉 Slow and steady – speed limits are low (around walking pace) to stop waves rocking moored boats or damaging the banks.

👉 Narrow spots & bridges – if you see a bigger boat coming, give way. They don’t turn as easily as you!

👉 Locks = teamwork – let boats coming out of a lock go first, and share when you can.

👉 Overtaking – only if it’s safe and the other skipper gives you the nod.

👉 Be kind to moorings – don’t block bridges, locks, or water points. And ease off the throttle when passing tied-up boats.

🌿 Extra good-to-knows:

  • Don’t dump anything in the water (keep it clean!).

  • Lifejackets are always a smart idea.

  • A smile and a wave go a long way on the water.

At the end of the day, canals are about slowing down and enjoying the ride. Keep it chill, keep it courteous, and everyone has a good time.
